APRON, X-RAY PROTECTIVE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a lead-impregnated vinyl plastic apron suitable for protection of medical personnel during fluoroscopic or radiological procedures.
Salient characteristics:
The apron shall consist of 4 or more layers of lead-impregnated vinyl plastic, or of a mixture of lead-vinyl and antimony-vinyl layers. The front and back facing shall be made of fiberglass, nylon-reinforced vinyl, or flexible urethane plastic. The shoulder (or back) pieces shall be made of the same material and color as used to make the front and back facings of the apron body.
The edges of the apron and shoulder pieces shall be bound with cloth tape, or otherwise suitably sealed.
The apron shall have a nominal dimension of 38 inches from the bottom of the neck cutout to the bottom of the apron: The width of the lower portion of the apron shall be a nominal 24 inches. The height of the neck cutout shall be 4 to 6-1/2 inches.
Two ties shall be furnished to secure the shoulder pieces. One strong tie, a minimum of 36 inches in length, shall be securely attached to each shoulder piece.
The apron shall provide a minimum of 0.5 mm lead equivalent protection at 85 KVP. Each apron shall be identified to show the manufacturer’s name, lead equivalent protection at 85 KVP, month and year of manufacture or other control data to identify the apron by lot number, and a cautionary statement for users to advise them to periodically radiograph the apron to detect any damage to lead protective layers. The marking shall be by means of tabs secured to the inside of the shoulder pieces or edge binding, or by imprinting of the inside of the shoulder pieces.
