APRON, X-RAY PROTECTIVE
(Dental Patient)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a lead-impregnated vinyl plastic apron suitable for protection of patients during dental x-ray examinations.
Salient characteristics:
The x-ray protective apron shall be constructed of three layers of lead impregnated vinyl sheeting. Each layer shall be a minimum of 0.015 inch thick. The lead impregnated sheets shall be sandwiched between a top sheet of any solid color vinyl sheet, except black or white, a minimum of 0.009 inch thick, and a flexible urethane foam laminated vinyl sheet, a minimum of 0.005 inch thick. The urethane foam shall provide a clinging action to the patient’s clothing, eliminating the need for ties or fasteners on the apron.
The five sheets shall be bound together with a sewn cotton binding or other suitable edge binding. All edges shall be tightly secured, with no openings. All stitching shall be strong but shall not damage the material. The stitching shall be at least 6 stitches per inch for each line of stitching used.
The apron shall be formed to provide protection to the chest, abdomen, neck, and groin area of a sitting patient. The apron shall provide a minimum lead protection equivalency of 0.30 mm up to 85 KVP.
The apron shall be approximately 35 inches long and 23 inches wide. The apron shall have a tapered neck cut-out so that the distance from the bottom of the apron to the bottom (narrow portion) of the neck cut-out is approximately 27 inches. The distance across the neck cut-out from one shoulder piece to the other shall be approximately 8 inches. The height of the neck cut-out shall be approximately 8 inches.
